The Independence Outdoors Course gives you the skills and confidence to be safe, free and independent outdoors.

It teaches you essential skills,how to use your brain and senses, to understand your surroundings and belong there like our ancient ancestors did, instead of just passing through.

You'll learn survival skills appropriate to your experience, including: fire, shelter, campcraft, water, wild foods and navigation!

You’ll be able to watch the sunset, relaxed in the knowledge that fading light will hold no fear for you. You will wander off paths to find secluded beaches -- places others never go.

You will also learn:

  • survival skills -- how to, and in what order
  • what gear you need – and what you don’t
  • how to walk so it's enjoyable, not exhausting
  • your rights and responsibilities in the countryside
  • what to do if things go wrong
  • how to read map and compass
  • confident navigation at night
What type of people do Independence Outdoors?
All types! Our groups are usually half men and half women, with many solo travelers, or families.

Do I need to be fit?
No. Except for rare instances, everyone can come on a course because they are tailored to the fitness level of those attending. Independence Outdoors isn’t meant to be strenuous – unless you want it to be – it’s meant to teach you the skills you need to go outside and have fun.

Who leads the programme?
Instructor Malcolm Handoll is a certified Mountain Leader, with over 15 years’ experience leading individuals and groups of all ages in the mountains of Scotland and Wales.

He and his wife Rachel will work with you personally to develop a programme that meets your needs, interests, and fitness level.

Price
?150 per person for a two day course (enquire about other durations to suite).

All equipment provided, including tents, sleeping bags, food, and navigation gear, though you are welcome to bring your own.
