Duration: 1 day
With minimal theory, we go straight into using maps, the language of maps, and how to relate your map to the real world.
You will then learn how a compass works and how to use it with a map.
Finally, you’ll learn how to stay safe outdoors.
Leisure users of the countryside, walkers, and everyone who thinks they have a ‘poor sense of direction’ or they ‘cannot navigate’. You can, and will love it.

Duration: 2 days
Two days of intensive practice outdoors so that you are able to navigate in the dark and white out. Competently, quickly and safely.
Outdoor enthusiasts, Guides, MIC, MIA, ML, WML students, group leaders and walkers.
£150
Duration: 4 hours. Evening.
Discover the joy and freedom of walking at night – prove to yourself that you really can trust your navigation, in thick mist, white out or dark, gain confidence and be places when no one else is around – but nature is alive!
We use 1:25,000 scale maps, torches, compass and watch to safely find your way to safety. Once you have mastered this you will never fear the onset of dark ever again. You might even venture to watch the sunrise or observe natural phenomena, like the aurora or stars. What freedom!
You will find out whether you can rely on your navigation skills or not – but this time in a safe and controlled situation. You will also not be able to ‘compensate’ when off bearing or pacing short, so will get much greater feedback on your skill level.
We will take you out on safe but realistic terrain, typically heather moorland, in the dark or the midnight twilight gloaming or simmer dim as it is known locally. Whilst everyone else is stuck in front of the TV or looking at an early night, we’ll go exploring and teach you how to cope in the dark, what to do in an emergency and how to not get into trouble in the first place.
Test your compass work and pacing – but most of all, overcome any fears or worries of being out at night. Learn how to move, how to stay safe, how to look after yourself and your party. You never know when you might need this skill.
Believe it or not, this is fun and a very liberating experience – when done properly with a professional.
Anybody participating in navigation courses, and anybody who ventures outdoors – really everyone would do well to experience this. You just need to know beforehand how to use a compass and map, for simple bearings, and understand map scales and contour features.
